Summary

This study is a formative evaluation to describe the ways that the program was being implemented, the main enabling and limiting factors and to assess outcomes in order to improve the design and planning of future volunteering and related activities. Drawing on program documentation and in-depth interviews, the study found that two-thirds of the 25 initial referrals were matched with a volunteering opportunity. Just over half the participants undertook the work experience, volunteering a total of 832 hours at the one organisation. The evaluation findings suggest that small scale programs like Bathurst Grows represent 'proof of concept' where positive outcomes can be achieved with minimal cost.
