Jax
A bright future in tech and innovation
Jax
What I really like about maths is I really push hard in it, I already know a lot about it and it's good to learn new stuff.
My name is Jax.
I go to Illaroo Road Public School.
I'm for the Wergaia mob and my totem is the pelican.
Lisa
Jax was a recipient of the Nanga My Award for Academic Excellence, but he displays high potential in quite a few of the domains, particularly within physical and creative.
And it's been really great to see his confidence grow and to see him have those opportunities at our school within the opportunity class and with the broader extracurricular activities that we provide here at Illaroo Road Public School.
Jax
The projects I like to do with my friends, is probably different things on micro bits, like before I said a dice where you can just like shake it and it'll show you different numbers.
I just like working really hard with them.
If you really want to like achieve your dream, you got to really work your butt off, really got to try your hardest.
If you want to make academic, you got to study a lot.
Keep going, believe in yourself and just feel like you know you can do it.
Lisa
It's really important for our Aboriginal students and particularly Jax, to retain those connections to their culture.
They also bring their cultural knowledge into the school and able to share it within our school community and it's really important that they're able to go back into their community and share their share their learning journey within the school as well.
Jax
I'm Jax and this is My Future, My Culture, My Way.
"If you want to achieve your best, you have to study a lot and believe in yourself, and know you can do it” – Jax McGivern-Picken
Who am I?
I’m Jax, a Year 5 student from Illaroo Road Public School and my Aboriginal heritage is tied to the Wergaia community. I hold a passion for mathematics, coding and innovation. I’ve always loved solving problems and exploring technology to create new things while also challenging myself in other areas such as sport too.
My journey
With support from my teachers, I’ve been able to take part in advanced learning opportunities that challenge my abilities and allow me to grow. One of my proudest projects has been working on a micro:bit, which is a computer program connected to a device that lights up based on the types of code I input into the program. I love experimenting with new ways to use my skills and to bring my ideas to life and have been able to work with a number of gadgets that have tested my capabilities.
HPGE opportunities & Nanga Mai awards
I’ve been given access to HPGE opportunities, which provided further academic resources, mentoring/learning opportunities and challenges that matched my learning needs. These programs gave me space to thrive academically and creatively. I was also recognised for my achievements at the Nanga Mai Awards, where I received the Outstanding Academic Excellence Award (Primary) 2024.

Connection to culture & identity
My culture and identity inspires my journey and many of the things I work on. I know that the opportunities I gain are so important and inspire others to also reach their own potential academically, especially other Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students. I have always been a part of Aboriginal-focused activities at school and enjoy being able to contribute in different ways to my culture, school and community. I feel that using technology allows all of us to keep culture strong and accessible. This helps me connect my skills in coding and innovation with pride for my culture and community.
What I’ve learned & where I’m heading
In the future, I want to explore more of my potential in academia and sports, and inspire other Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students to pursue their dreams and goals in whatever they aspire to.
