Current experienced EAL/D specialist teachers can develop leadership and communication skills as a mentor for newly appointed EAL/D teachers.
EAL/D Teacher Mentoring Program
The EAL/D Teacher Mentoring Program is designed to strengthen the leadership capabilities of experienced EAL/D specialist teachers and develop their skills in mentoring.
In this program, mentors work closely with a newly appointed EAL/D teacher (a mentee).
The program includes:
- in-person sessions
- self-paced online learning
- activities to complete between sessions
- mentoring opportunities
- a Community of Practice
- reflective practice.
These are led by experienced leaders from the EAL/D Education team and the School Leadership Institute (SLI).
2026 Expressions of interest
Expressions of Interest for the 2026 EAL/D Teacher Mentoring Program have now closed. Successful applicants will be notified by 21 May 2026.
What the program offers mentors
- Opportunities to develop skills as a mentor.
- Networking with other EAL/D specialists – both mentors and mentees.
- Matching with mentees to support their professional growth.
- Support, guidance and resources from the EAL/D Education team.
- A virtual Community of Practice space to share, learn and ask questions.
- Access to the Lead and Aspire Mentoring Program (LAMP). The EAL/D Education team will arrange registration with the School Leadership Institute.
Becoming a mentor
EAL/D specialist teachers with five or more years of EAL/D teaching experience are welcome to apply. Before applying please:

- Ensure you can commit to all parts of the program.

Becoming a mentee
Teachers new to the EAL/D role are welcome to apply. Preference will be given to EAL/D teachers with less than five years EAL/D teaching experience.
New EAL/D teachers will be paired with an experienced EAL/D specialist teacher mentor. Mentees do not take part in the LAMP program, however, will take part in targeted professional learning run by the EAL/D Education team.

Professional learning and support
The EAL/D Teacher Mentoring Program provides learning and support beyond the LAMP program. Aspects of the program delivered by the EAL/D Education team include:
Online information session: Provides an overview of the EAL/D Teacher Mentoring Program including roles, responsibilities, key dates and program expectations. The online information session is for both those interested in becoming mentors and mentees. Supervisors are also welcome to attend.
Online introductory session: An opportunity to meet the EAL/D Education team, learn about available support, resources and the Community of Practice. This session is for mentors and mentees that have been accepted into the program.
Two in-person workshops: These in-person full-day workshops are designed to support mentors and mentees develop their knowledge and skills.
Community of Practice: A dedicated space to connect with other EAL/D teachers and members of the EAL/D Education team to learn, share ideas and grow together.
Dedicated support: Each participant will receive ongoing personalised support from a member of the EAL/D Education team. This includes scheduled check-in sessions throughout the course of the program.
Mentee and mentor online reflections: Provides an opportunity for mentors and mentees to share what they have learnt throughout the program.
The Lead and Aspire Mentoring Program (LAMP) Mentors participating in the EAL/D Teacher Mentoring Program will participate in the Lead and Aspire Mentoring Program (LAMP)delivered by the School Leadership Institute (SLI).
The Lead and Aspire Mentoring Program (LAMP) develops the mentoring expertise and skills of current and aspiring leaders and teachers. Participants will increase their understanding of the purpose of mentoring, develop practical mentoring skills, and build and maintain mentoring relationships.
