Resources to support teachers prepare for, analyse and action information from the Year 1 Number Screening Check.

Professional learning

Online self-paced professional learning supports teachers to implement the Year 1 Number Screening Check and interpret information to support planning for teaching and learning.

Module 1 Administer (60 minutes)

  • Focuses on foundational learning, supporting teachers to effectively implement and administer the screener.

Module 2 Analyse (60 minutes)

  • Supports teachers to analyse data from the screener to identify student learning needs and inform targeted teaching.

Module 3 Action (60 minutes)

  • Builds teachers' capacity to plan for targeted teaching using data from the Year 1 Number Screening Check.

Administration guide and student material

The Administration guide supports teachers to administer the Year 1 Number Screening Check.

The guide and assessment materials are delivered to all department schools during Term 2 Week 1.

Accessing the assessment

Teachers use the online tool to enter student responses. The online tool is available via ALAN during the Term 2 window.

For technical assistance:

Offline recording form

Use the offline recording form only in circumstances where the online assessment is not available. Teachers then enter student responses and teacher observations into the online tool when it is available.

The form is available during the assessment window.

Adjustments and withdrawing students

Year 1 Number Screening Check: Advice for inclusive administration (PDF 242KB) (staff only) supports adjustments when administering the Year 1 Number Screening Check, with specific advice for:

  • EAL/D students
  • students with disability
  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait students.

The document also includes information on withdrawing students.

Vision impaired student materials requests

Large print and Braille versions of the assessment are available for students who already access Braille and Large Print Services and who are supported by an itinerant support teacher vision.

Complete the Year 1 Number Screening Check – Request for alternate format student materials order form (PDF 221KB) (staff only) and email to Braille and Large Print Services no later than Term 2 Week 2.

Year 1 Number Screening Check includes information on the purpose of the assessment.

An 8-part skill resource series supporting educators to address cohort, class and individual areas for growth as identified by the Year 1 Number Screening Check. The series covers the following key skills:

  • Subitising
  • Numeral identification and recognition
  • Verbal and object counting
  • Place value
  • Ordering and magnitude
  • Number before and after
  • Number combinations
  • Addition and subtraction strategies

IfSR – Number and place value (IfSR–NP) to gain additional information about individual students following the assessment.

Teaching and learning resources – numeracy supporting the practical application of evidence-based teaching of number sense.
