Workforce

Supporting student wellbeing is a key priority in NSW public schools.

Specialist staff support schools in promoting the wellbeing, engagement and learning of students. These staff work with students, families and school staff to create safe, inclusive and supportive learning environments.

The NSW School Counselling Service plays a key role in supporting students, parents, teachers and school staff in every NSW public school.

School counsellors and school psychologists work directly with students to support their learning, wellbeing and mental health.

They can help students with learning needs, friendships and relationships, family concerns, and managing emotions such as anxiety, worry or sadness.

School counsellors and school psychologists also work with families, teachers and other professionals to help create safe, supportive learning environments and strengthen connections between home, school and the community.

Student Support Officers (SSOs) support the wellbeing and engagement of students in school.

They work closely with the school's wellbeing team and the School Counselling Service. SSOs help students build positive relationships, manage challenges and connect with support when needed.

They also work with community organisations and services to help students and families access additional support.

The National Student Wellbeing Program is funded by the Australian Government.

The program helps schools support the wellbeing of students and the wider school community. Schools can do this through a school chaplain or student wellbeing officer.

The program replaced the National School Chaplaincy Program from 2023.

Schools can apply for funding to engage an approved provider to deliver chaplaincy or student wellbeing officer services. Students can also choose whether to access the support available.
