Teaching road safety in the real setting
Excursions provide valuable opportunities for students to apply road safety skills in real-world contexts.
At Kirrawee Public School, Mrs Harris used an upcoming visit to Hazelhurst Gallery as an authentic learning experience for her Kindergarten class. In preparation, students engaged with activities on Safety Town and explored their walking route using Google Maps.
A worksheet from Safety Town was adapted to reflect the specific journey to Hazelhurst, helping students connect their learning directly to the excursion.
During the excursion, students practised their pedestrian safety skills in a real traffic environment, reinforcing classroom learning in a meaningful and relevant way.
“The students loved the activities, and it was vital to revise these skills before walking to Hazelhurst,” Mrs Harris said.
