Teaching is more than a career, it’s an opportunity to make a lasting difference in the lives of children and young people. The Early Career Academy supports aspiring teachers to connect with universities and key partners, apply for scholarship programs and understand more about the opportunities available to teachers in Australia's largest education system.

Initiatives under the 'Start' pillar of the plan are designed to support you at the very beginning of your journey, from early exploration to enrolling in a teaching degree, so you can begin developing the skills and knowledge you'll need to thrive in the classroom.

Expanded access for career changers

The department delivers targeted programs to guide and support career changers as they transition to the teaching profession.

The Transition to Teaching Scholarship Program supports individuals retraining to become teachers in high-demand subject areas in NSW public schools. The program provides financial support and guarantees a permanent teaching position upon successful completion of studies.

What's planned for 2026

In 2026, the Early Career Academy for Teachers will continue to build on this support by:
  • reviewing and restructuring our scholarship programs to support future teachers in high-priority key learning areas/specialisations and locations.
  • exploring new award programs, including principal-nominated awards, for high-achieving HSC students.
  • developing a Career Partnerships strategy to strengthen connections with industry groups, career services and tertiary bodies to make it easier for you to access clear, practical information about becoming a teacher.
  • expanding the Future Teachers Club, establishing additional clubs across New South Wales and creating opportunities for students to earn university credits towards a teaching degree while still at school.
