Eligibility criteria

To be eligible to apply for the School Counsellor in Training Program, an applicant must:

  • be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • hold a current NSW driver's licence with the ability to drive one’s self
  • hold a current permanent approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education
  • currently be engaged as a teacher with the NSW Department of Education or previously been engaged as a teacher within the last 3 years in a casual, temporary or permanent capacity
  • meet the university entry requirements
  • if currently completing a 3-year sequence of undergraduate psychology (Graduate Diploma of Psychology or similar), be eligible to enrol in an APAC-approved Psychology Honours year (fourth year of psychology academic study) from semester 1, 2027 at a university of choice and complete the qualification by the end of 2027
  • if currently completing the fourth-year sequence of APAC-approved psychology (Advanced Graduate Diploma of Psychology, Honours equivalent or similar), meet Charles Sturt University's entry requirements into the Master of Professional Psychology (School Psychology), including Charles Sturt University’s independent application, interview and referees report process. Advice on applying for entry into the Masters program will be provided during the department’s merit selection process
  • be willing to accept an appointment as a permanent full-time school counsellor in a NSW public school in an agreed area of workforce need on completion of studies for a minimum period of 3 years.

Agreed locations

As part of the application process, applicants will be asked to select individual Staffing Areas where they are prepared to accept an appointment on completion of their studies.

The Staffing Areas applicants are prepared to accept an appointment to are linked to the level of scholarship the applicant applies for.
